Summer 2022 Updates

The following information is our most up-to-date and current understanding of requirements and regulations for the Summer of 2022. We will update this as new or changed information is made available to us.

Last updated: May 17, 2022

✡ Why is CYJ requiring robust pre-camp testing ?

Our goal is to have as normal a camp season as possible. That means we wish to minimize testing, masking, and social distancing over the summer at camp and to maximize fun. We are requiring robust pre-camp testing to ensure that we do not accidentally allow Covid to enter camp when campers do at the beginning of the season.

✡ Where can I obtain pre-camp testing?

Options include your child’s primary care provider, a local urgent care, or a pharmacy. CVS, which has over 4800 locations across the country, offers Covid-19 testing (usually at no-cost to you). Please see: https://www.cvs.com/minuteclinic/covid-19-testing to find your closest location. Another option for those in the Boston area is CIC health (at a cost of $70). Please see: https://www.cic-health.com.

✡ What if my camper had Covid in the 90 days prior to camp arrival?

Please upload their positive test result to the “2022 Covid-19 Latest Test Result” form in the Forms and Documents Section of CampInTouch. If you do not have proof of this positive test result, please notify our Director of Health and Wellness, Davida Rubin-Baker, at davida@cyj.org. Your child will not be required to take a PCR test. However, we will ask you to show TWO negative rapid antigen tests done at least 24 hours apart with the second test taken after 6 pm on the day before drop off (June 28 for first session/full season; July 24 for second session). Please take a screenshot of the negative tests and print out a hard copy.

✡ What if my camper tests positive for Covid (either by PCR or antigen) during pre-camp testing?

Should the result of one of the pre-camp tests be positive, you will contact our health team (davida@cyj.org) and we will work with you to get your camper to camp as soon as possible!

Your camper will isolate at home for at least 5 days (day 1 is the first day after the positive test date). Starting on Day 5, we recommend you antigen test your camper daily (24 hours apart). When you get two negative antigen tests done 24 hours apart, we will make an arrangement for you to bring your camper to camp where we will follow up with a confirmatory antigen test and have them join their group.

✡ What if I’m concerned that my camper’s PCR might detect a prior asymptomatic infection?

If you are concerned about this possibility, we suggest you do an additional PCR 10-14 days prior to drop-off. In case of a positive test at that time, your camper should have time to isolate appropriately and still come to camp on time.

✡ What if my camper tests positive for Covid at camp?

We will be testing all symptomatic campers over the summer. We will also be testing asymptomatic campers when it is recommended by the CDC and/or NH state guidelines (e.g. after a known exposure to a household/bunk contact) .

Should your camper test positive, we will get them comfortable in an isolation space where they can be cared for by our health team and will contact you to pick them up. Please note that we are asking that you or a designated adult (listed in your “designated adults form”) pick your camper up within 4 hours of notification. If you live far from camp, please rest assured we will work with you.

✡ What happens if someone in my camper’s bunk tests positive for Covid at camp?

According to camp policy, the positive camper will be sent home to isolate. According to NH state regulations, because everyone in our community will be up-to-date on the Covid vaccine, no one will need to quarantine. However, the state of NH recommends household contacts (bunkmates) to:

  • Wear a well-fitting face mask around other people for 10 days, especially in indoor settings

  • If symptoms develop, stay home and get tested for COVID-19

  • Get tested for COVID-19 on day 5, even with no symptoms

  • If testing is positive, see #5 above

For a summary of the NH recommendations, see: https://www.covid19.nh.gov/sites/g/files/ehbemt481/files/inline-documents/sonh/isolation-and-quarantine-recommendations_0.pdf

We are committed to maintaining as normal a camp experience as possible for bunkmates while observing these recommendations and expect to minimize or even eliminate masking by altering programming and moving all-camp activities (such as evening activity) outdoors. We will screen test bunkmates daily ( with an antigen test) until the entire bunk tests negative for five days in a row. We may use PCR testing when warranted.

✡ What will opening day look like in terms of health screening?

  1. The morning of drop off, you will fill out the health screening tool on CampInTouch
  2. On arrival, you will be greeted by a staff person and show your negative pre-camp test results (hard copy). There will be no additional testing on opening day unless your child is showing symptoms of illness. If your child has new symptoms the morning of camp, please antigen test them to ensure that they are in fact, Covid negative.
  3. Your child will have a lice check by The Lice Aunties.

✡ What will opening day look like in terms of masking?

Because we expect parents to be indoors for brief periods of time on opening day, we will provide disposable masks for parents, campers, and staff to wear indoors. After all parents have left camp, we plan to have campers mask-free. Of course, circumstances may arise over the summer that could require us to implement masking as a mitigation measure to keep our community healthy and safe.

✡ How can camp families partner with CYJ to help ensure a healthy, safe summer?

In one very important way, you already have! We are starting camp with a community that is up-to-date on their vaccinations including their Covid vaccinations/booster. Thank you for helping us implement this strong health measure. Other measures you can take before camp are to practice low-risk infectious disease behavior before camp: avoid crowds, choose being outdoors over indoors, mask indoors, stay away from sick people, and use good hand hygiene.

We are confident in our ability to provide a safe, healthy, and fun experience for your camper this summer and are eagerly awaiting their arrival to camp! If you have any questions or concerns, our Director of Health and Wellness, Davida Rubin-Baker, RN, JD would be happy to reach out to you. Please just let her know by emailing davida@cyj.org.
